In order to delineate AltCottagecore from the mainstream tag, we must clarify the origin of the mainstream tag.
"Cottagecore is a lifestyle movement based on the ideas of simplicity, slow living, sustainability and a deep connection to nature."1 "Cottagecore is about "cottage living", but not in the traditional sense. It’s more of a way of thinking and how to make your life simpler through what you wear, eat or buy.
The cottage is central to cottagecore, as its values are closely tied to notions of sustainability, self-reliance and slowing down in nature ... This movement focuses on harmony: it’s important to take your time over things so you can appreciate them more than rushing around trying to get everything done at once.
Cottagecore is all about doing what you love. It’s not just cottage industries, cottage crafts and cottage interiors that are important to this aesthetic; it’s also cottagecore activities like fishing in a nearby creek or making your own jam ...
The cottagecore movement is a response to the fast-paced world we live in. It’s about slowing down and living with intentionality by embracing simplicity, creativity, and beauty that comes from imperfection. "2
One of the above sources attributes the aesthetic’s genesis to Scandinavian Hygge culture, and the other to the prairie homesteaders of 19th-century America. While both of these claims are partially correct, I’m not including them as solid info in this entry because it would be more accurate to acknowledge that Cottagecore is a melting pot of origins. This is due to the very low barriers to entry in a visual culture that hasn’t developed any "gatekeepers" yet.
By "gatekeeper," I mean someone who acts as the arbiter of a style or subgenre, often by seniority or ownership of the movement’s genesis. Many aesthetic lifestyles have a well-defined origin, often tied to a certain store, musician, or era—like Mana-sama with both Gothic Lolita and Visual Kei, or Shibuya 109 with Gyaru. We have a clear idea of "who, what, when, where, and why." In these cases, the lifestyle and actions came first, and the pictures were taken of the culture in action. With Cottagecore, it feels like the subculture was reverse-engineered—the pictures came first, and the actions and lifestyle choices came later, designed to match the pre-depicted ideals.
This relates back to the genesis of the aesthetic. Everyone quickly acknowledges the use of linens or cottons in the fashion and home goods of this lifestyle, but some go on to exclude Black people from the Cottagecore narrative. The Hygge, rural Dutch, homesteaders, Arts and Crafts-era British, and other originators of the fashions we are copying relied on fabrics processed by POC hands. This exclusion can be explained by the fact that the images of the dresses, day shirts, and table runners with custom embroidery came first, without the knowledge base of the lifestyle attached to it—thus, devoid of the nuance of the truth behind the aesthetic.
As long as we strive to welcome everyone moving forward and give everyone an equal shot at being part of the Cottagecore lifestyle, we must acknowledge some of the abuses that occurred to obtain the raw materials that built the foundation of this aesthetic. If you curate your company carefully, I’m confident that most of the community has become far more open and welcoming than the historic inspirations ever were.

So as part of my slow living/altcottagecore lifestyle - I have a balcony garden that I have been trying to use free, ethical or up-cycled materials to sustain
Then I have just been picking up thrown out garden containers for about 6 month before starting phase one, which was Catnip, Lettuce, Chives, Chia, all free from the library, or the smoothie shop for the chia(I just asked nicely.)
Chia pet!
I have been working on my sticker designs for a while as well as just wanting to spark joy, so today I sat outside and gave away stickers while I worked on the garden.
